Spiritual Junkie is a semi-autographical memoir with touches of magical realism to help bring out the spiritual story.
Chris is an ex-raver who after way too many drugs, makes an attempt on his life. He returns home to reflect on his past and wean himself of the narcotics. He follows his father’s advice and finds a serious job to settle down with but Chris is bored.
His eyes are opened one day when he receives a spiritual book from an ex-rave friend and Chris decides to put all his energy into the spiritual path. In the beginning, Chris’s journey is a light-hearted romp as he tests the more outlandish aspects of the alternative world by attending holo-tropic breathwork classes and Reiki Weekends. While having fun his eyes are opened to a new world of excitement and adventure as he heals himself along the way.
Reiki classes and breath workshops are soon replaced with more serious Zen and Tibetan Buddhist retreats as Chris seeks a deeper meaning of existence. A silent retreat through the desert helps Chris heal the past with his alcoholic father and find his true self.
As well as the fun journey Chris falls in love and out of love producing a child along the way. The story starts to take on a more surreal journey when he meets his inner-child at a Tibetan Buddhist retreat or a ghostly Van Goh while working in Amsterdam. There is no end to Chris’s adventures because like life they keep rolling on and on. After an hallucinatory experience of Christ on a cross, Chris falls asleep and the story ends.
Spiritual Junkie is a tale of the ups and downs of all our lives and how sometimes we quite never find the answers to the questions.
