Brought up in a traditional and idyllic environment, the author exceeded academically and became a physician. While dedicating his emotional energy towards his career, he failed to cope with personal relationships, leading to multiple disasters, even as he was accumulating the material wealth signifying success. Following a life-changing and financially devastating divorce, the author moves to the tiny island of Vieques and becomes a bartender. There, he leads a much simpler life and finds that living with the eccentric and colorful characters there leads to many challenges and many rewards. He learns much about, and finally begins to like, himself. And he unlocks the secret of having a bona fide relationship. Along the way, he learns that to flourish there, a sense of humor is mandatory, as well as an ability to function on “island time.”
